We are absolutely delighted that one of our Dance City CAT alumni, Amonik Melaco, has been cast as a performer in the award-winning Singin’ in the Rain, which is heading to Sadler’s Wells this year, on 30 July!

Amonik Melaco, aged just 19 years old, will be making his theatre debut on 30 July at the prestigious Sadler’s Wells. He will be performing choreography by Olivier Award nominee, Andrew Wright, on a stage which has seen performances by leading dance companies and performers such as Akram Khan, Company Wayne McGregor and our very own Dance City CAT alumni Connor Scott, who won the BBC Young Dancer competition on that very stage in 2015.

Amonik trained on our CAT scheme for two years and during this time had the opportunity to work with teachers Neville Campbell and Anthony Lo-Giudice. Amonik said the Dance City CAT scheme was brilliant. He added, “a huge thank you to everyone at Dance City CAT for instilling all the qualities that they did and for all of the excellent dance training.”

In 2014, facilitated by the training he received on the CAT programme, Amonik joined the New Adventures Young Cast for Lord of the Flies at Newcastle Theatre Royal and again for Romeo and Juliet at Norwich Theatre Royal. Following his time on the CAT, he progressed to train at Laine Theatre Arts, one of the UK’s top musical theatre schools.

Amonik believes that the training that he received on the Dance City CAT was fundamental to his success in breaking into the theatre industry and we wish him every success in the future.

Singin’ in the Rain will be premiering at Sadler’s Wells on July 30, before touring the country from September 5. It will be coming to Theatre Royal Newcastle in May 2022.
