Rosie Macari was a Dance City CAT student from 2006 – 2011. She then went on to study at LABAN and now has a contract touring in Motionhouse’s outdoor work BLOCK.
How did you discover the CAT scheme?
I found out about the CAT scheme through my school, one of the teachers from the CAT scheme was scouting in schools across the North East.
What had been your experience of dance before the CAT scheme?
When I was around 6-7 years old, I tried freestyle and disco at a local dance school. I then left and attended after school dance clubs with Feet First Dance and contemporary class at Dance City on Saturday mornings.
What has the CAT scheme taught you?
It has taught me how much commitment and dedication you need to move forward within the dance industry from a young age. It also taught me fundamental dance technique and creativity needed to take further into the contemporary dance world. The scheme also gave me the opportunity to work with leading choreographers and professionals from all over the country teaching me about the dance industry beyond training.
Where has the scheme led you so far?
The scheme has led me to where I am today. From the CAT I successfully secured a place at Laban Conservatoire, one of the leading contemporary dance university’s which then led to working with various choreographers and companies as a performer and taking me all over the world to perform to thousands of people.
What are any of your future aspirations?
For my future aspirations, I want to teach others what I have learnt as a performer in the dance industry especially younger aspiring dancers.
What advice would you give to a young person who is interested in auditioning?
My advice would be, if you have a strong passion for dance, the drive to push yourself, an open mind into learning this audition is the one for you.
What impact has the financial support of a Department for Education Grant had on your dancing?
Having financial support is so important, I am not from the wealthiest family, nor the poorest. However, having the financial support grant allows everyone who has a passion to be a part of the CAT a chance.
Finally, is there anything else you would like to add?
The team at Dance City are brilliant at what they do and the scheme changed and shaped my career. I have them to thank for the opportunities I have experienced.
